HDOT recently completed the Hawaii Road Usage Charge Demonstration project that reached out to almost 360,000 Hawaii residents with customized driving reports showing the number of miles they had driven over the past year, how much they had paid in gas taxes, and how much they might pay in a road usage charge. Leveraging the existing vehicle inspection and registration systems offers a lower cost way to report vehicle mileage using a process that the community is familiar with, requires no extra work, and has a level of trust already established.
